Hughes. At your service for 100 years.
Humble beginnings
Since 1921, Hughes has been run by a family, for families, with service at our heart. Though our business has evolved and adapted over time, this core value hasn’t.
Founded in Lowestoft, Suffolk in 1921 by Frank Hughes, the company originally rewound electrical motors for fishing boats. They bought their first shop in 1928, building and selling radios.
Keeping it in the family
When Frank passed away, his children Peter, Phyllis and Jim took over the company. Almost 100 years later, Hughes remains a true family business under the third generation of Robert and Jeremy.
Because of our roots, we understand what is important for a happy home. Appliances and technology are a part of the family. They shape family memories and connect us with moments.
Evolving with the times
Hughes’ history saw them quick to embrace and introduce new technologies, such as TVs and labour-saving kitchen appliances. Through renting, these products became affordable for the typical household in the post-war austerity years and the company’s engineering experience meant they could offer repairs too.
This service continues to play a pivotal role in the current marketplace, offering peace of mind to homes and families.
Major growth, same service
Into the new century, Hughes has grown into the country’s fourth largest specialist electrical retailer and the second largest provider of rented home entertainment and kitchen appliance rentals. A successful trade division provided kitchen appliances to the London 2012 Olympic Games and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
With more than 100 fully trained electrical engineers, the commitment to service and hassle-free home electricals remains undimmed.
Affordable, upgradable, reliable.
The same today as it was a century ago.
At your service.
From our family to yours.
