As I write this there’s little more than two weeks left of the school summer holidays. When I was asked to review the Sony KDL43W756 I knew that escaping the British Summer to chill out in front of the TV would be a great medium to test colour, depth and the overall viewing experience.
The first thing that catches the eye about this TV is the fantastic design. TV cases and bezels are getting ever smaller but, even so, I was impressed with the slimline style and lack of unnecessary bezel. It does come with wall-mounting instructions and no doubt would look great there, too, but there was no time to wait: the rain was starting! Time to get the TV up & running.
The TV was so easy to set up that I was soon settled down for movie afternoon with the kids. We plumped for the Harry Potter films (not in one viewing, I hasten to add); I soon got a feel for the X-Reality Pro engine that’s tucked away inside. The X-Reality Pro engine continuously analyses then optimises every single pixel. With the opening scenes a veritable riot of colour and fast-changing hues, this TV gives an incredibly detailed and lifelike picture.
Of course, this is no ordinary TV; it is a Smart TV. Subject to your internet connection & subscriptions you can access Netflix, YouTube and all the apps you love and much more, without the need for a computer or keyboard. YouView is Sony’s seven day scroll-back TV guide that brings together catch-up TV from across BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and more besides.
Perhaps one of the less lauded features is Voice Search. Tired of endless browsing in the hope something might ‘spring out’? That’s where Voice Search can help. Voice Search really does what it says it will do, allowing you to search for content without having to pick up the remote. You can also get recommendations: asking for “action movies” for example, will bring up a list of suitable options.
I really enjoyed this TV; from its looks to the amazing picture. I learnt that, with the right TV, you can actively look forward to a grey, miserable day!
