Get ready for a summer of great music with the Samsung R6 360° wireless multiroom speaker, available in a stunning White or Black. There’s no need to be stuck indoors (or even 2 metres from a mains socket), as this beautifully designed speaker is also portable and rechargeable. Whether it’s a barbeque in the garden, a picnic in the park or a summer party – this speaker will fit the bill. We waited for some good weather (e.g. several months), then sent Ria off to review the speaker.
First things first – the packaging and appearance. I’m a sucker for good quality product presentation so on unboxing the first thing to impress is the innovative packaging. Featuring a neat lift-out bag to ensure you don’t lift it out using the upward-firing tweeter, the speaker elegantly slides out from the polystyrene. Once the speaker is lifted out of the bag, you are holding what looks like a Faberge egg from the future. Also in the box you’ll find a simple set-up guide, a quick guide to getting started and an in-depth manual.
The clever design somehow manages to be futuristic yet simplistic and the front of the speaker features only those buttons that you really need: POWER, PLAY, PAUSE and VOLUME + / -. Turning the speaker all the way round, you see that there’s a slot – called the Ring Radiator – that runs all the way around and it’s this ‘slot’ that provides the 360° sound. Inside the speaker there is a driver that fires the sound down, driving the audio out through the Ring Radiator, meaningfully omni-directional sound – no matter where you stand around the speaker!
Truly multi-functional, this speaker isn’t just a party piece; it’s an amazing multiroom speaker, too. The R6 connects directly to your network, without the need for a hub, and can be wirelessly connected to speakers in every room in the house. They also work beautifully as a stereo pair. You can control your music from anywhere in your home thanks to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. For multi-room there is Samsung Multiroom App, a single app that allows you to control volume levels and share music across any of the devices paired with the app.
It won’t take long to set up and you can enjoy your favourite music quicker thanks to Wi-Fi capability or start streaming subscription music services such as Spotify, Deezer, Tidal and Napster or listen in to your favourite podcasts or radio stations. I had a quintessentially British Sunday morning, in the garden with a pot of tea and The Archers Omnibus, via BBC iPlayer Radio!
Once charged this great speaker will give up to 6 hours playback – which perfectly took us from an upbeat afternoon barbeque playlist into an evening of chilled summer sounds, once the children were in bed!
