In an age of streaming and wireless audio I have to say that it feels somewhat refreshing to come across a digital radio that completely hones in on the essentials: amazing sound quality, great looks and a really strong tuner. With the Roberts Expression DAB radio, there’s no docking station for your iPhone or android, there’s no media streaming and no internet tuner, just a pared down radio that effortlessly sounds as good as it looks. Oh, and it looks amazing.
Evoking the art deco generation from Roberts’ origins in the ‘30’s , this stylish radio will look great in any room in your home. The ash casing curves around the front and rear drilled metal grilles. The volume and tuning knobs, alongside the six buttons on the top, are rubberised to complete the effortlessly stylish appearance of this radio. A discrete grey plastic handle rotates 180 degrees from the front to back of the case, where it can rest on the power lead.
Don’t worry – this isn’t a radio that puts style over substance; don’t think that I’m so focused on its looks because it had nothing else to offer as that couldn’t be further from the truth! Light on resources, it will run for up to 100 hours on a set of four alkaline D-cell batteries. Of course, it makes sense to use rechargeable batteries and this you can do by simply flipping the selector to NiMH and fitting them. The integrated charger then tops them up when it’s plugged into the mains, meaning it will always be ready for action if you want to move to another room.
