Want to cook healthier, more nutritious meals? Then this is THE competition for you! We’ve teamed up with the wonderful people at Rangemaster to offer an incredible prize for this week’s winner: the Rangemaster RMB45SCBL/SS steam oven. We tasked resident cooking enthusiast, Ria, to test one out (and fill our hungry stomachs), so read on to find out more about this brilliant prize and discover how YOU could be the winner!
Admission time: I am a big Rangemaster fan. I have a Rangemaster range cooker and I’ve visited their UK manufacturing plant in beautiful Royal Leamington Spa. That said, I’d never used a steam oven before so I approached with some trepidation.
The oven itself looks incredibly stylish, finished in black with a stainless steel handle. Built-in, the touch controls and white LED display are unobtrusive and sleek. So, it looks great, but what sets it apart is how it cooks.
Steam ovens make for healthier mealtimes as steaming retains nutrients, minerals and vitamins. There’s no need to add any oil, so there’s no added fat, either. Food cooked in a steam oven will also look better as cooking with steam preserves not just nutrients, but texture, flavour and colour too.
What can you cook in a steam oven? Anything, put simply, but since we were (at the time of testing) in the midst of asparagus season, I started off with my June favourite of poached eggs and asparagus. The set-up is incredibly easy: slide out the steam reservoir at the top and fill it with water. The reservoir holds one litre of water, you then close the stopper and slide the reservoir back in. After that, you pop your food into the cavity, turn on the oven (which will automatically come on at 100°), adjust your cooking time and… that’s it. Succulently steamed asparagus and perfectly poached eggs in 4 minutes.
Next, I tried steamed hake in a soy and ginger glaze, using the fish function and that was so good that even the 8 year old notoriously picky taster loved it. Over the week, we trialled everything from summer fruit porridge to individual New York cheesecakes to chicken breasts with pesto and everything was cooked so beautifully that I think this oven is at the top of my must-have list!
Reheating food using this oven is ideal. Rather than drying it out, as microwaves often do, the steam invigorates the food, making it both look and taste exactly as it did when the food was first prepared. In our ongoing war on waste, this Rangemaster oven proved to be a huge benefit.
This really is an incredible addition to any kitchen and with a host of oven functions you can cook everything from cheesecakes and compotes through to pizzas, pies and complex meals, knowing that the flavours are preserved and the food is juicy, succulent and incredibly tasty.
