With the colder weather now setting in my wife started her seasonal wish list again – and a slow cooker was yet again mentioned. She has wanted one for a couple of years but never got round to buying one – so it was time for me to treat her (wow – what a husband).
With this in mind I started prowling through review sites for inspiration as I realised I didn’t know a lot about them. This then led me to the above model Morphy Richards 48701.
It’s well priced, simple and inoffensive looking, so what’s not to like, I thought. At this point I began my own interrogation on our range of slow cookers – OMG, we have a lot to choose from: different colours, sizes and features – how was I going to decide for my wife?
So, I brought in the big guns and spoke to my Mother-in-law, who is already in possession of an older (but still available) 48710 model. She confirmed she loved it, never had any issues or poor results after several years use, but did mention one slight negative which is that it is, for her, quite heavy. With this in mind, I compared both models side by side and could immediately see a difference between the two models in that the newer 48701 version used a metal pot rather than ceramic. This has 2 distinct advantages: less weight (so easy to handle around the kitchen) and also the ability to use it on a hob to cook or sear meat before starting the slow cooking process (thus saving the need to use extra saucepans and frying pans to prepare any meat if necessary).
I took the plunge, and bought it, and glad that I did – my wife loves it.
Not only has it produced some wonderfully succulent dishes, it has also made our busy schedule a little easier. Many of you will know the regular pattern of the school run, homework and cooking dinner all at the same time when you get home from work and with two young children, we are grateful for a way to cook healthy, hearty and nutritious meals – that don’t take hours of prep.
With the slow cooker all you need to do is prepare the meal in the pot the night before (whilst the kids are in bed), let it cool, pop it in the fridge overnight. In the morning, just drop the pot into the slow cooker housing, switch the cooker on and it will be gently bubbling away all day ready for the evening, freeing up plenty of time for activities with the kids and a welcoming cooking smell as soon as you get home from work.
We’re absolutely delighted with our purchase, so if you’re on the fence – go and buy one, you won’t regret it!
