Review: Morphy Richards 43922ARG Hot Water Dispenser

Guest blog by Phill Coady

One question we get asked regularly by customers is can we recommend a lightweight kettle. Usually the customer is trying to find a kettle that will be easier to lift and pour from when filled with water.

The problem is kettle design hasn’t really changed over the years. Whether you compare a very simple kettle like the Lloytron E1505WH against the very elaborate Bugatti 14VERACR-14, though aesthetically very different the basics are remarkably similar. Both kettles allow you to over fill them with 1.7 litres of water, making them cumbersome to lift, and then waste electricity boiling all that water when all you needed was a cup.

To see if there is an alternative to using a kettle I’ve had a Morphy Richards 43922ARG hot water dispenser home for a week. The hot water dispenser takes up a similar amount of space on the kitchen worktop as a traditional kettle but stands much taller, it could easily be mistaken for a coffee machine.

Instead of inefficiently boiling all the water in the kettle, a hot water dispenser only boils the water you need. The amount of water dispensed, anything from a small cup to a large mug, can be controlled by the variable volume slider on the top of the machine. To fill the 1.8 litre water tank a handle lifts up so you can carry the dispenser to the tap and a large hatch opens allowing you to easily fill the tank without spilling water everywhere. Once full to the level you require simply return the water tank to it’s base.

To fill a mug with hot water you only need to place the mug on the drip tray provided, slide the Variable Volume control to the far right to select a 300ml mug and press start on the dispenser. Because it’s only heating the water you need this uses up to 70% less energy than a standard 1.7 litre kettle. Once the water is boiled it’s poured into the mug and the dispenser switches itself off.

mph-1After only a few days use my girlfriend declared that “we’re keeping this aren’t we?” and our long serving kettle has been quickly relegated to the back of the cupboard next to the sandwich maker.

As a lightweight alternative to a traditional kettle the Morphy Richards 43922ARG is great. A full tank of water will make up to 6 cups of hot water and you only have to lift the dispenser to fill it. As it’s only boiling small amounts of water the boiling times are very quick and you’re saving money too. If you live in a hard water area you’ll need to descale the dispenser regularly – we highly recommend Appliance Doctor eco-friendly descaler.
