So, I was asked what I thought of another generic steam iron, and despite my eye-rolling and mutters of “I’d rather looked crumpled than iron” to my boss, I was still despatched home with the little device to get acquainted over a rather wet weekend. The steam generator isn’t particularly heavy, even fully boxed. Various features and highlights emblazon the packing: “2600 watts”, “4 steam settings”, “5 bar pressure”… impressive but still not likely to get me excited about ironing.
The box stayed sealed and untouched, the usual day-off housework takes place and as I come to the end and take my jeans out of the dryer for that evenings outing, I realise that they were in a ridiculously creased state. Running short on time I knew there was only one option and reached for the steam generator. How hard could it be? This was the task it was made for…
Here goes, box opened and the Morphy Richards 330001 steam gen iron lifted out easily as the iron is secured to the base by a small turn catch. The iron is white & pink/purple mix in colour. It’s a fairly small in size compared to a lot of steam generators and has only one control button at the top of the handle. So far, so good – although no ironing has yet taken place.
Not being entirely au fait with an iron, I decided to prepare properly so pulled out the instructions. The guide is straightforward to follow. I had the iron water filled (1 litre max) and anti-scale cartridge fitted in seconds, I powered it up using the single button. This button can be pressed multiple times to simply flick through the steam levels available. The guide then asks you to hold down the trigger, (this is under the handle) for a minute to allow the steam to be drawn through on first use of fitting a new anti-scale cartridge (available in store). The cartridge treats around 30 litres of water before needing to be changed and nestles neatly in the base where the iron sits.
I laid the offending jeans out and gently passed the iron over them. The iron had very little weight to it as the water is all held in the base unit but I was delighted to see the creases vanish instantly. Impressed, I pressed on to the hem which was all out of shape, turned up the steam and pulled the trigger. The jeans stood no chance and were transformed into a blue masterpiece. It now seemed a shame to wear them!
I reached into the clothes basket and grabbed tea towels, t-shirts, my daughter’s school dresses and applied this brilliant appliance to them all. What a brilliantly simple little device, it made short work of them all leaving no crease uncreased! I was beginning to believe I was some kind of ironing genius (I do now accept that this is not the case, Morphy Richards are!) This little gem uses a new Intellitemp function, meaning you can tackle any ironable item on the one setting with quality results.
With the weather being so awful, the evenings outing was cancelled. But after spending a bit of time with this little beauty the weekend didn’t seem such a loss, and I wondered what else I could make crease free. I realise that like most tasks, they are so much better when you have excellent equipment. Now when I get asked what I think of ironing, I happily direct customers to steam gen irons.
Find out more about this iron here or find your local store where we’ll be happy to help you with your purchase (but not your ironing!)
