The Hoover TH71SM01001 is an inexpensive vacuum that performs well on both hard floors and carpets. It is easy to use and is lightweight, weighing in at less than 6kg. This is particularly important if you need to carry the vacuum cleaner upstairs – you don’t want to be lugging anything too heavy up and down the stairs.
The 700 watt motor is equivalent to a performance of 2100 watts and has an “A” energy rating. That’s always good to hear if, like me, you vacuum often; all ways to keep costs down are appreciated!
From the box I needed to fit the handle to the cleaner body and fix it with the screw provided, this is very easy to do and I didn’t even need a screwdriver as this was easily tightened with a coin.
There’s a cord clip at the back of the handle which helps me avoid accidentally running over and damaging the cord while using the cleaner.
On the front of the machine there is a carpet care control selector which raises and lowers the height of the brushes. With the machine in the upright position I simply moved the selector to the required setting for the carpet type or floor covering for edge-to-edge cleaning.
After a quick read of the enclosed manual, I found that for main cleaning operations and to give best performance and energy efficiency, setting 1 is recommended. It is ideal for short to medium pile carpets, hardwood floors and ceramic tiles. I vacuumed my lounge and dining room carpets and was impressed with the results.
Setting 2 is best for delicate floor coverings such as vinyl, lino or parquet flooring and will prevent damage to this sort of floor surface. I used this setting on the bathrooms and kitchen floor and could see the difference – despite only vacuuming 2 days before!
Additional settings make it easier to push the vacuum cleaner if you have longer pile or luxury carpets.
To power the cleaner on or off I simply pressed down on the right pedal with my foot; the foot pedal on the left hand side unlocked the vacuum cleaner to move it forward.
In addition to the main cleaning operation I was pleased to find that the cleaning tools that are stored on board are very easy to use. I simply removed the stretch hose from the hose socket, pulled out the extension tube and long crevice tool and fitted the extension tube to the stretch hose. You can also add the long crevice tool to either the tube or directly to the stretch hose. In the same way the dusting brush will fit either the hose or tube making both very versatile tools, for all around the home.
The cleaner is very easy to store with cord storage hooks to wind the cord around.
Emptying the large 3 litre bin couldn’t be simpler. I released the container from the machine and held it over the waste bin. An easy release button at the back of the dust container then opens the door, which emptied the container with no dust contact – a boon if you have any allergies.
The only other thing that’s needed to maintain top performance from the cleaner is to keep the washable filters clean and they are very easily accessed. On this model it’s recommended to wash the HEPA filter after every 5 bin empties while the exhaust filter should be washed once a month.
So, overall the Hoover Smart TH71SM01001 is a very reasonable priced lightweight but powerful cleaner that features edge-to-edge cleaning with convenient on board storage, a stretch hose and a host of tools that will make cleaning the whole house a breeze!
