If you haven’t yet got your hands on the new Dyson V6 cordless vacuum then I can recommend that you give one a try. You may well have seen James Dyson on TV recently, showing the innards of the V6.
If you tried one of the older cordless models, then I’d also urge you to give the latest variant a go as you may be surprised at the differences that have been made to the design. While the idea of a cordless compact Dyson was always good, the battery life and overall weight did put some people off. Well, after an in-depth trial I can say that the new model feels altogether better balanced and while it’s also lighter the feel in the hand is much more likely to encourage you to whizz around and use at a moment’s notice. A great tip is to mount it on a wall bracket, which means it’s constantly charging and ready to go.
I’d noticed on previous models that although very efficient suction as always with a Dyson cleaner, I thought the combination of higher weight and a fairly stiff trigger action to the power trigger meant I would stop and start more when using them. Anyone who has used a cordless drill will know the action I mean. The new V6 Digital and V6 Animal require much less grip strength in the finger which means more comfortable handling when pointing and “steering”, either floor level, upholstery cleaning or cobweb/spider chasing. Battery life is 20 minutes or a still useful 15 to 17 mins with the power head attachment in place. The motorised head makes quick work of bits of fluff and debris, working just like a much larger upright cleaner and not relying solely on suction alone to drive the rotating brushes which is a definite advantage over other handhelds.
There is a boost function for stubborn areas. This handy function provides up to 6 minutes of higher suction for more difficult tasks, but that does of course eat into battery time. I think for day-to-day use most people will leave the tube and motorised head in place and get used to quickly zipping around higher traffic areas of their carpets. I truly think that the amount of time available on a charge will be fine for most homes, as a lot of cleaners are pushed or dragged around with the power on not doing much while moving. With the Dyson V6 you only press the trigger when you actually need to clean an area so little power is wasted. The first time you attempt to empty the bin you may find dust on your foot as it drops straight down without needing to demount it (obviously that is a once only deal but you may want to watch other new users – if only for your own amusement!) After only a couple of uses I was easily used to it and found it very quick and great for a quick cleaning spree. It does not need to be any bigger either as emptying it is free and makes the package very compact. Build quality is up to the usual Dyson standards and noise is remarkably low considering how fast the digital V6 motor spins.
