The week-long Hunstanton Lawn Tennis Tournament is said to be Britain’s largest event of its kind, after Wimbledon. The competition certainly has a large number of matches and competitors, who range in age from Junior to Veteran.
This year’s Scott Dunn Hunstanton Tennis Tournament opened in glorious sunshine at the Recreation Ground. It was one of the busiest first days on record, with over 250 Junior matches played on a total of 38 grass courts. These numbers increased considerably when the Senior tournament events integrated with the Juniors in the latter part of the week. The tournament that has been running since 1920 and has attracted players from all over the British Isles – and now has an International flavour, with entrants this year coming from Singapore, Germany and France. This has always been a family orientated tournament with grandparents, parents and children all participating but now it is attracting more of a higher rating. The youngest players range from Juniors at under 10 through to Senior Veterans at over 65, with one Veteran doubles pairing having a combined age of 156 years! The tournament runs for 7 days cumulating in the Finals Day on Saturday.
Hughes once again kindly supplied the tournament with all the fridges and freezers for the catering and the bar. Stephen Holt, Senior Sales from our Wisbech store has been assisting his father, secretary Chris Holt with the Tournament for many years now. This year there was a competition to win a Fitbit Wireless Activity Smart Wristband. The question was “How many metres of ‘Stop Netting’ are there on the outside courts? (Courts 11-38)”. The winner with the nearest guess was Evie Philips from Oxford. Pictured is Mark Page, Branch Manager from Hunstanton, presenting Evie with the prize donated by Hughes.
