Not since Marmite has something so polarised opinion but it seems that the Great British Bake Off has achieved just that. Love it or hate it, GBBO (as we aficionados call it) seems here to stay and is swift becoming a mainstay in the viewing habits of many households, recently recording 10 million viewers. To put that into perspective, there are around 49 million adults in the UK!
Here at Hughes, we’ve seen a rise in the number of people wanting to get more involved in baking, cooking and updating their kitchen appliances so we decided to get into the spirit of the glorious Great British Bake Off with some baking, demos and soggy bottoms to raise money for two excellent charities: Macmillan Cancer Support and East Anglian Children’s Hospices (EACH).
On Saturday 29th August our stores across the Midlands and East Anglia donned their oven mitts and set about making some marvellous gastronomic treats in honour of Britain’s return to baking obsession! From microwave meringues to colossal cakes, fruit scones to extravagant cupcakes, there were some amazing efforts by all the teams and plenty of customers, too!
At the end of a very busy day, we were delighted to have raised more than £1000 for our charities.
The Great British Bake Off is a TV phenomenon, inspiring millions of us to get baking. But baking can become a pain instead of a pleasure without the right equipment.
