Recently on the 31st of July our Haverhill Branch took part in the cycling event Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Every year Macmillan helps millions of people who have been/are being affected by cancer, they can help with anything from a simple chat with one of their volunteers to helping people through their treatment and beyond with one of their professional nurses. Macmillan are a non-profit organization so every year they rely on kind hearted people like you and me to raise or give what they can to allow them to continue doing all the fantastic work, because of this and past experiences with them I chose to give something back and raise a minimum of £750 for their cause.
This is a gruelling 100 mile ride that started at the Olympic Park which then went out to the hilly Surrey Countryside. When in the countryside the route went up the two massive climbs of Leith Hill & Box Hill that were used at the 2012 Olympics, this was by far the toughest part of the ride. Then finally back into Central London with a spectacular end cycle right past Embankment, Big Ben with the finish line on The Mall – this is also the only day of the year that you can ride your bicycle on closed roads through Central London. If you would like to see the whole route map, you can view it right here.
I have put below my overall statistics of the ride:
Total time excluding delays: 6h 23m (Total time including delays: 8h 12m)
Average speed excluding delays: 15.2mph (Average speed including delays: 11.6mph)
There was unfortunately an accident with a participating cyclist that caused some delay, but most importantly we heard they were OK!
