Happy December!
Advent calendars have been around since German printer Gerhard Lang produced the first example at the beginning of the 20th century and they’re a lovely way to count down to Christmas Day, whilst visually demonstrating to a 3 year old “No, Christmas Day is not tomorrow”.
Everyone loves an advent calendar and there’s one for nearly every taste. This year, for example, The Things are very excited about their Lego & Playmobil advent calendars. No longer are advent calendars limited to tiny pieces of milk chocolate in a series of vaguely tenuous shapes:
“Is it… a letter box? Why is it a letter box? Oh, sending a letter to Santa?”
“Mine’s a carrot shape. Oh, like a snowman’s nose. Riiiiight.”
Nowadays, advent calendars vary from the aforementioned cheap and cheerful thin chocolate daily treat to artisan handmade chocolates, candles, gin and even diamonds (really.)
