“Can you review something for our next great competition?” came the question. As usual, I responded with an over-enthusiastic “YES PLEASE!” You can imagine how my delight turned sour when I opened the box to find an iron. Ironing is NOT my favourite task, by a long chalk but in this house the following rule applies: “She or he who holdeth the iron also holdeth the telly remote and has absolute power over televisual entertainment”. So, I set up the ironing board, dragged the EEC mountain of ironing through and got ready for some entertainment in the form of X Factor. At this point His Nibs began sobbing, gently, in the corner.
First things first: it looks heavy but it’s really not and it fits perfectly onto my large ironing board plate. Everything locks together as a whole unit and there’s a cable storage unit at the bottom that pops out to wrap the cables around the unit when not in use. The iron itself is very light which I find surprising and, I confess, I worry about how it’s going to manage to get the creases out. After filling the generator tank and letting it heat up for 5 minutes and get the steam built up, I am ready. I start off easy with a pillow case and it’s immediately apparent that I have been ironing all wrong for 20 years. The huge amount of steam in the generator means that it’s steam on tap and makes ironing effortless so the seemingly light iron is overcome by the amount of steam available anytime it is needed.
The tank is large so you will never have to refill while ironing in one batch. The ease of use when using the steam is amazing and, dare I say it, the whole ironing thing is suddenly much less of an arduous task and there are really noticeable differences in how things look. Our bedding, for example, was previously folded over and ironed by applying lots of pressure in the middle bit; the result was less ‘crisp and fresh bedding’ and more ‘stored in a crisp packet.’ Using this iron transformed our bedding into something not amiss in a luxury hotel. I’ve never timed myself doing the ironing but I went swiftly through an overflowing basket of clothes and bedding in probably half the time it would usually take! I even had to slow down at the end, so I could watch the end of X Factor!
I never thought I’d say it, but ironing may have just got interesting!
Will it change your life? Probably not. Will it make ironing less of a chore? YES, it absolutely will.
