With summer finally here, the town of Beccles is preparing itself for this year’s carnival.
The carnival, dating from the 1900’s, takes place this year on 16th and 17th August and includes some very exciting events. The Saturday morning includes a teddy bear parade, fancy dress competition and a funfair for all the family to enjoy! With many competitions going on, there are also several prizes up for grabs.
Feeling hungry? There are several food stalls available, if you fancy a quick burger to eat, as well as a fully licensed bar. The entertainment continues into the evening, with live music on stage starting from 6pm. A variety of acts will be performing for several hours in the evening, right up until 10.30pm.
Sunday hosts the annual Beccles Carnival Parade, which leaves Roys of Beccles at 1pm. With all the bright colours and the carnival atmosphere, it is sure to brighten up your day. The parade reaches its end at Beccles Quay, where there will be a static car display and steam display; brilliant for all the family.
If you fancy a cool off (or if the tropical storm hits, come and dry off), why not come and give us a look in our air-conditioned Hughes Beccles store and have a demonstration of the Samsung curved 3D or watch the new 4K ultra high definition footage – unbelievable!

The fun doesn’t stop with the carnival, though.
Now in its fifth year, the Beccles Antiques Street Market returns on Bank Holiday, August 24th. The market continues to go from strength to strength and is visited by thousands of collectors and bargain hunters throughout the day. Beginning with just 50 stalls in 2009, this August will see it double in size to 100 pitches with general and specialist dealers who will be selling a wide range of antiques and collectables including furniture, silver, china, linen, jewellery, books, clocks, retro and vintage design and decorative items. The dealers are experts in their field and are quite happy to share their knowledge and expertise with collectors. In fact it is the great selection of antiques, collectables and curios on offer that make this market so successful and creates a wonderful atmosphere that is much commented on. Many of the local shops and restaurants and bars are open that day and first class catering is incorporated into the market; including Big Sky Pies, Suffolk Hog Roast, The Flying Chef and local ice cream and fudge.
If you haven’t been before you really should give it a visit and experience the pleasure of a busy outdoor specialist market.
