Review: Samsung Q7 Series Ultra HD 2160p HDR QLED TV

Guest blog by Jamie.

So, the time is here again when companies release the latest technology they have to offer and I get excited about what is to come. Samsung are always one of the keenly anticipated ranges of TV’s and this year is no exception with the QLED’s hitting our shelves, so I am here to show you their versatile and powerful Q7 model.

So what is QLED? It is Samsung’s Quantum Dot technology and what does this mean to you? Well, firstly it means the TV can reach ranges of colour that have never been seen before on Samsung TV’s. These colours are all completely true to the shades that the TV should be displaying and allow the user to enjoy stunningly lifelike images and really enhance their viewing experience.

Secondly, this range of TV’s have technology called HDR 1500. HDR stands for ‘High Dynamic Range’ which basically allows the TV to reach higher black levels and higher white levels at the other end of the scale. The 1500 is the scale in which this is able to do this and is the difference in the nits (brightness) of the darkest black levels to the brightest whites.

Thirdly, the viewing angle on these sets has been increased, meaning wherever you are in the room you will not drop the colour/picture quality. They are capable of not dropping out the quality even at a 180 degree angle!

The Q7 TV’s also reach the European UHD Premium standards mark, which means they can advertise 4K/Ultra HD in the full knowledge it is at the peaks of its powers and meets a generic UHD seal of approval. So rest assured when you purchase a 4K Blu-ray player to accompany this fantastic TV you can watch movies at the highest possible quality available.

Cosmetically, the TV has a super-slim bezel, meaning that the whole screen is mainly picture with no nasty plastic surrounding around the set. It also has a strong metal pedestal that feels sturdy and is finished in a nice chrome finish. The back of the TV is also cleverly designed as it allows you to mount the TV with no gap to the wall meaning no TV sticking out far from the wall and looking clumsy.

So, what do you get for your money and what is in the box? Upon opening the box you can see how much Samsung care about their products with polystyrene holding the TV so still and safe that it could withstand a fair bit of tough love on its journey to your door before breaking. The box contains the TV set itself, a two part pedestal mount, a one connect box and two remotes. One standard Samsung control and a smart control. There is also a package containing instructions, batteries and any fixings that are required.

Let’s have a closer look at two of the accessories: the smart remote and the One Connect box. First up is the smart remote and what a remote it is! The sleek, chromed metal design with minimal buttons just oozes class. The home button takes you straight to all smart features and using the circle control pad the ease of use is incredible. There is also a microphone button which allows you to control the TV with just the sound of your voice. However, an oft-overlooked but incredibly cool new feature is the back and getting to the batteries. An easy-to-use eject button lifts the remote up revealing the batteries on the front of the remote and each battery has a eject button so there is no real issue in removing the batteries.

Secondly, you may ask what the need for a One Connect box is. Well, as in the previous two years the One Connect box allows the consumer to plug in any accessory they may have to a simple box that has only one wire connecting that to the TV. This makes it ideal for people looking to wall-mount and gain a minimal look as no cables are left hanging from the TV itself. The box contains: 3 USB 2.0 ports, 1LAN port, 1 Optical port, 4 HDMI ports, a satellite connection as well as an antenna connection and the power connection for the box. This basically means any sound system or Blu-ray player plugs into the box and not directly into the panel.

Finally, the setup and using the product. Initially when looking to unbox and setup the TV I recommend two people to do it. After all is out of the box the pedestal is in two parts and needs screwing together. After that the TV can be placed on it and screwed in place before covering up all fixings with a plastic panel, ensuring a sleek finish. Plug in the One Connect box and connect it to the TV using the specific lead supplied. After all is plugged in and setup, power it up and follow the on screen instructions. At this stage you can input your Wi-Fi password to enable smart services such as Google Play store and Netflix. Just follow the instructions through to the end and then enjoy your TV.

In conclusion, it is a stunning TV that really has some great technology on it. Accompanied by the Samsung UBDK8500 4K Blu-ray player and a good cinema system you can now indeed bring the cinema quality pictures right to your very front room. All you need then is the popcorn!
